Blacks split on celebrating Fourth of July

There are no valid reasons why African Americans should celebrate July 4th, for it's a day that was approved when they were considered two-thirds of human, said activist Nate Clay, disagreeing with Black aldermen who support the 225th anniversary of independence.

However, Ald. Michael Chandler (24th) disagreed saying: "I'm an American. We're all Americans and it's up to the individual to celebrate July 4th. Some Americans celebrate Christmas, some don't."

"I don't think it's a thing that you should say because you're Black and you shouldn't celebrate the Fourth of July," said Chandler.
