THE year 2008 marks the Year of the Rat in the Chinese zodiac, but Cape Town's rats shouldn't expect special treatment.
Next month, Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) will start to monitor rats' habitats and catch them for euthanasia at two city "hot spots" - the CBD and the suburbs around the Liesbeeck River.
MSR completed extensive research into Cape Town's wild rat population in August. It found that there were about five million rats running free across the city. Ten areas were identified as "rat hot spots", including Hout Bay, Langa, Constantia, Sea Point and the city's harbours.
